A very simple yet complex passage that has one to wonder at the meaning of the stone in Daniel Two. Previous in this chapter, we saw Kingdom after kingdom, rise and fall, but the stone seem to be the last to stand. The daniel and revelation are books written in symbols, so the carnal mind will not understand those things which are spiritual. May we pray in our hearts that the Lord might reveal the meaning of Daniel’s dream to us all.
“Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. ” Daniel 2:34
Who/what is a stone?
“Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, ” 1 Peter 2:7
“Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. ” Acts 4:10, 11
Answer: Jesus
Where is the stone cut out?
“Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.” Daniel 2:45
Answer: Mountain
What is a mountain?
“And I will render unto Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight, saith the LORD. Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the LORD, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain. ” Jeremiah 51:24, 25
“O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.” Daniel 9:16
Then it must be Mount Zion, the mountain of God, because God is in the mountain.
Zion – the presence of God
Where is Mount Zion?
“But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,” Hebrews 12:22
Answer: Heaven
Which stone is in Mount Zion?
“Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.” 1 Peter 2:6
See also Isaiah 28:16
Answer: Chief corner stone
Who will dash them in pieces?
“Thou [Jesus] shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” Psalm 2:9
“And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury.” Jeremiah 19:11
Answer: Jesus
Why does Christ warn against not being contrite?
“And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.” Matthew 21:44
Broken (sunthlaō) – to dash together
When shall it be set up?
“And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.” Daniel 2:44
Answer: In the days of these kings
Who are these kings?
“And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.” Revelation 17:12-14
Remember that the stone hit the image at the feet. We have the 10 toes of the feet, representing ten kings. Daniel 2 about the 10 toes is parallel with Revelation 17. Ten is a universal number. Representing a universal power or government in the last days who will give power unto the beast. In the midst of all of this, a kingdom will be set up, which will stand forevever and at its setting up destroy the other kingdoms.
The Threshing floor
“Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.” Daniel 2:35
Notice the stone became a mountain.
Who will do this?
“Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” Matthew 3:12
Answer: Jesus
What are the errors to look out for?
The Catholics say it was set up in the days of the Roman Caesars, and thus claim for the Pope St. Peter’s chair and the kingdom, and that to the Bishop of Rome were the keys of this kingdom given at the demise of St. Peter, and the popes have been the successor and earthly head of this kingdom ever since. The Baptist writers, many of them, say the same, and claim a descent from the apostles for the Baptist church, making the church what the Catholics do the Pope; and try to show a regular succession of the church, as the Catholics do their popes. They also claim believers’ baptism (immersion,) as an initiatory rite into the kingdom, and that none are citizens of this kingdom until they comply with this requisition. The Episcopalians, or some of them, claim this same kingdom to have been set up in the days of the kings of England; and therefore the kings or queens of England are the accredited head of the episcopacy, and rulers over the visible church. The Presbyterians say it was set up in the days of Luther, among the German kings; the Quakers, in the days of Fox; the Methodists, in the days of Wesley; the Shakers, in the days of Ann Lee; and the Mormons, by Joseph Smith. {TKOG 3.2}
Where is Christ’s Kingdom or this great mountain?
“Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.” John 18:36
“And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;” Revelation 21:10, 11
Answer: It is not of this world, but heaven.
Who is that light?
“And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.” Revelation 21:23
Answer: Jesus
Who is this kingdom?
“And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” Revelation 21:2
Answer: The saints which make up heaven
Who will reign over the Kingdom?
And I will make her that halted a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the Lord shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever. Micah 4:7,
“Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.” Isaiah 24:23
“And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.” Revelation 11:15
Answer: Jesus Christ our Lord
Who shall inherit the Kingdom?
“Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.” 1 Corinthians 15:50
When shall we inherit the Kingdom?
“When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:” Matthew 25:31-34
Soon God will come again and set up His kingdom, not on this earth currently, but in the new heaven and earth. But first there are kingdoms which would be set up, and even persecute God’s people. However, in the end, praise God for this prophecy that we know that God’s kingdom to be the last to be set up forever. I pray that will all will be there, and do what is necessary to be there.
