Is Jesus and God one?

There are many beliefs out there as it pertains to the relation between God and Jesus. Some believe that There is “one” God who manifests himself in different forms. So God was incarnate into flesh as Jesus and came down to die for us. You might be thinking but does not the Bible say so.

Is there one God?

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God [is] one LORD: ” Due 6:4

Answer: Yes, There is one God

On the surface if we take this text and not “…seek her as silver And search for her as for hidden treasures;” we shall never “…understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:4,5. Now let us dig a little deeper in what the text really means.

In the Hebrew when a noun ends with a “im” it is then known to be plural.

Eg. Seraph =  Covering Angel

Seraphim = Covering Angels

The Word for God in Deuteronomy 6:4 in the Hebrew is Elohim which means a plurality of God or Gods. The singular is translated as El, which in this case is not.

So if it is referring to more than one God how then are they one?

When we also look at the original Greek, the word One is ekh-awd meaning properly united. The same word which is used in Genesis 2:24 ” Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. ”  Now was Adam and Eve walking around the Garden of Eden in one body as conjoint twins. No but they were one, as in aims, attributes, mind, etc. So it is in the context of Deuteronomy 6:4, they are one in character, attributes, will, etc.

“I and my Father are one.” John 10:30

Does Christ has the attributes of the father?

“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.” Colossians 2:9

All the characteristics of the Godhead or some call the trinity is in Christ; all knowing, all powerful, Almighty, Creator, Everlasting, etc. “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:” Philippians 2:5,6. Jesus is equal with God, no wonder the Bible states that they are ONE Lord, properly united.

Did Christ Have the same will as His Father?

“For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.” John 6:38

“Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” Luke 22:42

 What was His will?

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  John 3:16

Jesus came down to die for us, but a point we cannot miss is that the Father gave Him. Its was as hard to sacrifice His own Son than for His son to die on the cross. He gave Him so that we could have life, so that we could have an opportunity to be called sons and daughters of God. Jesus came to manifest the character of His Father which is love. And that love is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
