Was the earth created in six literal days?

Many scholars are now debating whether the creation account was literal days or not, in order to prove the earth to be billions of years and other scientific theories. This belief tends more towards the evolution side, counteracting biblical truths the Lord has established in the beginning. We will allow the bible to answer this question!

Who is the creator?
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

Note: The Bible starts of by dispelling different forms of error, from the atheist who believes there is no God and the polytheist who believes there are more than one God (Our only God is the Creator).

How were the heavens and earth created?
” By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. ” “For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. ” Ps 3:6,9

Answer: By the word of God, the world was made. This already tells me it is highly possible for this to be done within 6 literal days.

According to Genesis 1, how many days did it take for the creation account?
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day” Genesis 1:31

Answer: It took a total of 6 days.

Does the bible gives us the length of each day at creation?
Day 1: ” And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. ” Genesis 1:5
Day 2: “And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. ” Genesis 1:8
Day 3: “And the evening and the morning were the third day.” Genesis 1:13
Day 4: “And the evening and the morning were the fourth day. ” Genesis 1:19
Day 5: “And the evening and the morning were the fifth day. ” Genesis 1:23
Day 6: “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. ” Genesis 1:31

Answer: Yes! A day at creation is defined as the evening and the morning. This lets a know that a biblical day begins from evening which is sunset and end at the end of day which is sunset as well.

What did Christ do on the seventh day?
” And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. ” Genesis 2:2-3

Note: This is also instrumental in answering whether or not this earth took 6 literal days to be created. We see here, Christ rested on the seventh day and he sanctified it, thus establishing the Sabbath day of rest from the beginning. The question now; is the 7th day Sabbath a literal day?

The Word day in Hebrew is “yôm” which is the same word used in the 10 Commandments, written at Sinai.

How was this word “yôm” or day used in the 10 commandments?
“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” Exodus 20:8-11

Answer: Here we see the same example of toiling for 6 days and resting the seventh which God left from the beginning. Notice this commandment was established in Genesis and was not for the Jews only. It would not make sense if this day is symbolic of 1000 years or whatever the case maybe; for no one will be able to keep this Sabbath commandment.

Did Christ keep a literal Sabbath day while on earth?
“And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. ” Luke 4:16

Answer: It was customary for Jesus to read in the church on the Sabbath day which shows that this can only be speaking of a literal day 7th which the Lord instructed as a day of rest.

Much of the Answer lies in the Sabbath day which is a reminder of Christ creative work. God instructed the keeping of this day holy that we may be reminded Him: the Creator, and all his creative works! By believing otherwise, we open the door to the theory of evolution, which will cause us to have a false interpretation on the entire bible. Have you been following Christ’s example of 6 days toil and labor, and resting on his seventh day Sabbath?
