Is it important to study the bible?

Many people today are seeking to get a better understanding of the bible. If we do not understand the bible for ourselves, how then do we know what is truth and what is error when it is presented to us? Many people have distorted the teachings of the bible and are instruction others, leading them into error. But all this can be avoided if we learn simple methods in studying God’s word.

What warning did Christ give to his disciples?
“And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.” Matthew 24:4

Answer: Christ knew deceit will be prevalent before his second coming

Who are Christ’s disciples?
“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;” John 8:31

Answer: If we continue in his word, ( understanding and doing his word ) then are we his disciples.

Can we be deceived not knowing the word of God?
“Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.” Matthew22:29

What did Christ say concerning the study of the scriptures?
“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” John 5:39

Christ here refers to the old testament, which is the scriptures he used in his day. However, his statement is equally true of the new testament.

For what were the Bereans commended?
“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” Acts 17:11

Answer: The Bereans, after hearing or being taught the word, they went back and studied their scriptures seeing whether those things which they were taught lined up with the word of God. We need to be like the Bereans!

What are the scriptures able to do for one who believes them?
“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 3:15

Whom did Jesus pronounce blessed?
“But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.” Luke 11:28

Answer: A blessing is pronounced upon those who hear the word and keep it.

The bible tells us in 2 Timothy 2:15 :
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

God commissions us to study his word, that we may be approved unto him. We all want to be approved unto God! Let us daily search the scriptures and learn the truths written in the word of God!
